In April, Federation partnered on our sixth annual educational food pantry collection and lesson with the Hebrew school students from B'nai Shalom and East Brunswick Jewish Center. The students started by raising money for the Jewish Family Services food pantry, and then they went to East Brunswick ShopRite with shopping lists and a budget to purchase donations.
After they shopped for donations, lifelong Jewish educator and committed Federation family member Linda Benish held a discussion with the students about how it felt to gather all the items and be mindful of costs, while also thinking about the needs and feelings of the families who will be receiving the items. This exercise really resonated with the students, providing opportunities for thoughtful reflection and careful consideration of the needs and wants of others.
Events like this create opportunities for youth to be involved in their community; to explore and embrace values of chesed and tzedakah — caring and justice; and to practice the mitzvah of tikkun olam — making the world a better place.
