Rabbi Eliot Malomet leads the class in reading basic biblical texts through a different lens.

Class 2 – Cain and Abel

This brutally haunting story is told in sixteen verses, but the conversation that emerges from it is limitless. Who were these two siblings? What defined their relationship? Is there a political story here of rivalry between farmers and shepherds? Is this a murder or a manslaughter? Is there a worldview that is being presented here? Is this story a precursor for all human violence, anti-semitism even? What does this portend for us and what can we learn from it?
We think we know this story. However, there is plenty that we don’t know and need to discover as if we are reading it for the first time. In this lecture, we will examine the story in all of its detail in an attempt to answer these questions.
