New Jersey born (1898), bred, and educated - Paul Robeson, rose to become the most famous black man in the world, due to his exceptional talents as an athlete, scholar, singer and actor (on stage and screen). In addition, he was beloved by the masses everywhere for his dedicated activism in speaking truth to power about the harsh racial injustice in the U.S. and the continuing colonialism found in the countries of Africa and Asia. This program will include audio and visual elements that feature Robeson’s brilliance.
Some observers say Robeson is the greatest Renaissance man in US history, whereas many other Americans, both white and black, do not even recognize his name! We will see how agencies in the US Federal and State governments encouraged this dichotomy to occur, as they “scandalized his name” during the red scare of the 50’s, committed illegal acts that promoted violence, prohibited travel, (thus limiting his income and ultimately—his prestige). Happily, Robeson’s life and legacy were again celebrated in the US and around the world during the 100th anniversary of his birth, which this class will joyously explore!
A. Lynette Birkins has earned a Master’s Degree and Professional Diploma from Teachers College, Columbia University. She enjoyed thirty-six years as a teacher and district coordinator at Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools. In retirement, she has become a published poet and begun a satisfying career as a teacher at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers University.
