The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County presents Matisse and Picasso: The Jewish Connection, A Film and Talk Led by Professor Maurice Mahler, on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 2 PM. Admission is $8 members, $10 non-members.

Professor Maurice Mahler will give a talk and present a film about Henry Matisse
(French, 1869–1954) and Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973). There was an intense rivalry between Matisse and Picasso, artists who started a revolution called Modern Art. Toward the end of their lives, this constant rivalry created a bond of mutual respect and love. The film that will be shown is based on the complete Museum of Modern Art 2003 exhibit (https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/143?locale=en) and on the lives of both artists. The film highlights a Jewish connection to the artists through the influence on their careers by Gertrude Stein and by the Cone sisters of Baltimore, Maryland, who purchased their art.

Professor Mahler teaches at Rutgers University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI-RU). He is a retired advertising executive and instructor at the School for Visual Arts in New York.
This program is made possible in part by the Monmouth County Historical Commission through funding from the New Jersey Historical Commission of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
