Elon worked as a journalist for 24 years for several Israeli national newspapers, as well as for radio and television. Elon lectures on the 4,000 years of the history of the Middle East, specializing in the 100 years of the Israeli/Arab/Palestinian conflict. In this he presents a unique perspective, due to the combination of covering the topic as a journalist and serving as a combat soldier in an elite commando unit of the Israeli army.
