From 1908 to 1967, Maurice Chevalier appeared in almost sixty films, but he is probably best known to most Americans from his appearance in the film musicals GIGI and CAN-CAN. His life and career were much more than the suave persona seen on films.
His early career saw him in the cafés of Paris and in a very public affair after a stint as an infantryman and as a POW before the Gershwins brought him to the United States. Not only will we be discussing his music from his early days in Paris to his last work in films, but we will also be looking at his fascinating and often controversial life.
