Join us as we spend the day exploring Jewish Newark. First we’ll get a tour of the Manischewitz factory (a real, working factory) to see how some of your favorite Manischewitz products are made. After that we’ll go to Congregation Ahavas Sholom, (the last remaining functioning synagogue in Newark) which houses the Jewish Museum of New Jersey to see the exhibit, “The Synagogues of Newark: Where We Gathered & Prayed, Studied & Celebrated!”. Based on extensive archival research, this first of it’s kind exhibit presents information on over 15 synagogues in Newark during the first half of the 20th century when the Jewish population of Newark numbered more than 60,000. While at the synagogue we’ll enjoy a kosher catered lunch from The Green Chicpea*.

After lunch we’ll start our bus tour with tour guide and author Oscar Israelowitz. Among other things we’ll see and hear about The Liberation Monument at Liberty State Park, Old New Jersey Railroad Terminal, the former YM-YWHA, the former home of Philip Roth, the former Temple B’nai Abraham—a unique elliptical temple, the site of New Jersey’s oldest synagogue on Prince Street, the former flagship store of Bambergers, the former B’nai Jeshuran, Beth Israel Hospital and more.
