Where do Jews come from?  Israel? Europe? America?  Today, we know that Jews come from every corner of the world, but did you know that there are three distinct Jewish communities in India that are over a thousand years old?

Shalom, my name is Cantor Aviva Marer and I am currently serving as the Cantor at Temple Emanu-El in Edison.  My family comes from a long line of Bene Israel Jews from India and I am first-generation North American.  My grandfather built the first synagogue in New Delhi and acted as the Rabbi there throughout his life.  To this day, Shabbat services are held at my family's synagogue, Judah Hyam Hall, every Friday night.  As you can imagine, my family history is rich in culture and features some pretty amazing food!  In an exciting presentation, I will teach about the history of the Jews of India and the special "Malida" ceremony.  Join me as I take you through a rare Jewish ceremony that is specific to the Bene Israel Jews of India. There will be plenty of time for questions and you will have a chance to taste a sweet rice dish that I am making for you all.  Book your spot early because spaces are limited!  I am looking forward to taking you on this exciting journey through Jewish India.
