The Axelrod Performing Arts Center’s 10th Anniversary Concert event features recently married Broadway stars Jarrod Spector and Kelli Barrett in a new duets show, "This Is Dedicated: Music's Greatest Marriages" on Saturday, October 17 at 8 p.m. The show features the vocal power duo on many of the pop world’s all-time biggest hits, including "Proud Mary" (Ike and Tina Turner), "Somewhere Out There" (Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil), "Seven Nation Army" (The White Stripes) and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (Ashford and Simpson).
Spector, who currently plays legendary songwriter Barry Mann in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” and Barrett are often asked, "What is it like to be married to a fellow artist?" Bringing to life the greatest songs birthed from some truly remarkable marriages, the couple attempts to answer the question. From Alan and Marilyn Bergman to Sonny and Cher to Beyonce and Jay-Z, the themes of love, heartbreak, triumph, and despair infuse not only these incredible songs but also the storied partnerships that created them. In an evening filled with humor, heart, and astonishing vocals, Barrett and Spector celebrate marriage as the driving force behind this timeless music and tackle the difficult questions behind keeping it all together.
The Axelrod anniversary gala evening will begin with a champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception at 7 p.m., the concert at 8 p.m. and dessert to follow. Tickets start at $45. Tickets including the pre-reception start at $100.
Nominated for a Tony Award for role in “Beautiful,” Spector is also known for his vocal prowess as the iconic Frankie Valli in Broadway's “Jersey Boys,” which he played for a record 1500 performances. Other favorite roles include Gavroche in the Broadway and National touring companies of “Les Miserables” and the title role of "Hamlet" Off-Broadway. A Philadelphia native, Jarrod attended Princeton University and studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company. Kelli Barrett just finished playing the leading role of Lara Guishar in Broadway's “Doctor Zhivago.” She started her New York stage career as Gwen in “The Royal Family” at Manhattan Theater Club, and originated the principle roles of Sherrie in “Rock of Ages” and Mary Jane in “Baby It's You.” She played Nessarose in Broadway's “Wicked” in 2014. She has been seen in over two dozen major films and television shows.
The Axelrod PAC recently won the prestigious 2015 Perry Award for the Outstanding Production of a Musical in NJ for its recent production of “West Side Story” and was nominated as the “Outstanding Small Theater in NJ” by Discover NJ Arts. The state-of-the-art Axelrod facility has more than ample free parking, handicapped access, and hearing-assisted devices and is located at 100 Grant Ave., Deal Park, NJ 07723.
